Talcum Powder Lawsuit: Ovarian Cancer & Mesothelioma

Talcum powder is a widely used consumer product that is, and has been, advertised as safe. Millions and millions of people, especially women, have relied upon the supposed safety of talcum powder in making the decision to use these powders regularly themselves and on their children.

TALC AND OVARIAN CANCER

Tragically, it is now been revealed that talcum powder is, and has never been, a safe product. In fact, many scientific studies now show that the regular use of talcum powder by women in the genital area can cause ovarian cancer. The more frequently a woman uses talcum powder in the genital (perineum) area, the greater the risk of ovarian cancer. Evidence has also been uncovered that companies manufacturing and selling talcum powder knew that genital talc use increased the risk of ovarian cancer for many decades, yet continued to market the product as safe and issued no warnings.

TALC AND MESOTHELIOMA

The use of talcum powder has also been linked with mesothelioma: a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Many brands of talcum powder used in past decades have been found to be contaminated with asbestos. Women unknowingly breathed in asbestos when certain brands of talcum powder were used and the powder became airborne. Evidence has also revealed that, despite knowing of the asbestos contamination problem, companies making and selling talcum powder did nothing to warn the public.

RECENT TALC RELATED VERDICTS

Several juries have strongly condemned this corporate misconduct as it relates to both ovarian cancer and mesothelioma. For example:

A jury ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay a total of $72 million for causing the ovarian cancer death of a 62 year-old woman who regularly used J&J's talcum powder products (Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower).

A jury ordered Whitaker, Clark & Daniels, a supplier of asbestos-contaminated talc used in the product Desert Flower, to pay $7 million for the damages suffered by a woman who died of mesothelioma.

A jury ordered Colgate Palmolive, a manufacturer of a talcum powder (Cashmere Bouquet) found to be contaminated with asbestos, to pay $13 million for the damages suffered by a woman living with mesothelioma.
